"Big Tobacco prepares to fight proposed ban on menthol cigarettes" by Alistair Gray and Andrew Edgecliffe-Johnson

Rob Smith quoted in Alistair Gray and Andrew Edgecliffe-Johnson's Financial Times article "Big Tobacco prepares to fight proposed ban on menthol cigarettes," published on November 17, 2018.

The article reads:

Health campaigners point to evidence that menthol masks the taste of smoking, and also soothes the irritation, putting more people at risk of addiction and making it harder for them to quit. Yet the regulator would need to prove that menthol cigarettes was indeed worse for public health than regular cigarettes, said Rob Smith, policy analyst at Capital Alpha.

“It is 100 per cent likely that whatever they come up with is going to be challenged in court,” said Mr Smith. “The FDA has a long way to go from making a press release to finalising an actual regulation.”
